ODESSA STUDENT WINS TOP HONORS AT NATIONAL CONTEST

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Hannah Scott of Odessa High School in Odessa, Missouri won 2nd place in the senior individual exhibit category at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest on June 16, 2016. The work of Scott captured the attention of the National History Day Contest judges with an inspiring project titled, A City Under Siege: Delivering Hope One Flight at a Time on the Airbridge to Berlin.

More than 600,000 students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, and international schools in Central America, China, Korea, and South Asia created projects for the National History Day® Contest this year and less than 1% were judged worthy to attend the national finals at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest, June 12-16. Students competed in five categories: documentaries, exhibits, papers, performances, and websites. Nearly 3,000 middle and high school students presented their work related to the 2016 theme, Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History.

“The National History Day Contest requires intensive research and analytical thinking skills,” said NHD Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “Each student involved in the competition spends countless hours deliberating, researching and editing, and traveling miles to present superb historical research. Hannah Scott should be proud of this accomplishment. It takes a truly remarkable project to receive an award at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest.”

Founded in 1974, at Case Western Reserve University, National History Day® has grown from a contest of a few hundred students to a multi-national educational organization dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of history. More than half a million students, who are guided by more than 30,000 teachers, utilize the project-based learning framework that is central to the National History Day® Contest.
